Metal Gear RAY
Metal Gear RAY was the first "anti-Metal Gear", introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It was developed by the U.S. Marine Corps to combat the hundreds of Metal Gears created from the leaked design documents of Metal Gear REX. RAY was equipped with advanced targeting systems along with many deadly weapons. As well as machine guns mounted on its large, bulbous wings, RAY had missile launchers on its back and a water jet in its mouth section.
While being transported aboard an oil tanker to disguise its cargo, the prototype RAY was commandeered by Revolver Ocelot - under the control of Liquid Snake - after he and Sergei Gurlukovich stormed the tanker. RAY then sank the vessel and escaped into the sea.
A new, mass-produced model of Metal Gear RAY was commissioned to protect Arsenal Gear. This model had no tail and was controlled by the A.I. "GW". Raiden faced many of them in Arsenal Gear's rectum, and eventually gave up fighting them. When they began to malfunction as a result of a virus infecting GW's systems, Solidus eliminated several of them. Ocelot - again under Liquid's control - escaped in the last RAY.
RAY returned in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It fought against Metal Gear REX, and lost to the machine it was designed to destroy.
