Ames (first name Richard) was a Patriots agent who was once married to Philanthropy member Nastasha Romanenko.

In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden had to find Ames to get info on the location of the president. He had to use a directional microphone to find out which of the hostages was Ames, as he had a pacemaker, so his heartbeat sounded different. Ames accidentally let Raiden know that he was working for the Patriots, this was then confirmed by Ames last words to Ocelot before he died: "You'll never escape the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo!"
Ames has a minor part in Snake Tale: A Wrong Doing, on MGS2: Substance.
