Sokolov is a Russian scientist, who specialises in nuclear weapons. He originally defected from the Soviet Union to the United States where he stayed and had a wife and child. When the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, the U.S.S.R agreed to move out of Cuba thanks to a few last minute conversations between the two superpowers. However, the Soviet Union demanded in return that they have to get Sokolov back. This signified how important the work he was doing was to the KGB.

[edit] Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

In the game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Sokolov is first introduced in the Virtuous Mission, where Naked Snake had to get him back to America. Sokolov showed Snake the weapon he had been designing, the Shagohod. It was a tank that was capable of launching nuclear missiles from any terrain. He warned Snake that because of the immense power that came with his weapon, he was a wanted man. In the Soviet Union, there was a power struggle; Volgin, the commander of GRU, was hoping to steal the Shagohod from the KGB and use it as leverage to overthrow Khruschev. Sokolov was then captured by Volgin, and forced to complete the preparation for Shagohod. This would mean the end of the Cold War, and the beginning of a new World War.

Snake's new mission was to rescue Sokolov again from the fortress Groznyj Grad where he was being held prisoner. Unfortunately, Snake was too late and by the time he reached him, the development had finished. After Volgin found out that there was a spy in his ranks, he tortured Sokolov, asking him if he was the spy who had stolen C3 and more. Sokolov was weak though, and the player hears Volgin say "Well, I guess he's dead." after an intense interrogation. This is the last the player hears of Sokolov and it was presumed that he had died.

[edit] Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

In the game Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops however, Sokolov was seen again. He had been recaptured, and was being forced to help with the development of the first Metal Gear, codenamed RAXA. This design was originally made by Aleksandr Leonovich Granin, who was killed by Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The player could capture Sokolov and recruit them into Big Boss's army in the game.
