Metal Gear II
Colonel Roy Campbell is first introduced to the player in Metal Gear II as the new commander for the FOXHOUND unit. He is Solid Snake's main contact during the game via codec, where he tells Snake what his objectives are, and also gives general gameplay tips.
 Metal Gear Solid
Campbell returns in Metal Gear Solid, where he keeps the same role as he had in Metal Gear II. He tells Snake that his neice, Meryl Silverburgh, is being held captive inside Shadow Moses and that he wants Snake to rescue her. As the game progresses, it is revealed that Campbell was forced to keep secrets from Snake, including the fact that Meryl is actually his biological daughter. Near the end of the game, Roy is arrested but only briefly, as he is released when Solid Snake defeats Liquid.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
In the Plant mission of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Colonel Roy Campbell returns again as the commander for the new character, Raiden. He supports Raiden by using Codec throughout the mission, but he starts to behave strangely when a computer virus is uploaded to Arsenal Gear. It is then revealed that the man Raiden was speaking to on Codec was not actually the real Roy Campbell, but a complex AI created by GW - part of a network AIs created by The Patriots. The virus created by Emma Emmerich was causing the AI of Campbell to malfunction which explains the weird phrases he says during the last phrase of the game. (For example, at one stage he instructs the player to "turn off the game console")
 Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
In the PSP game, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Roy Campbell is shown as a young soldier. The player finds him at the very beginning of the game when Naked Snake is stuck in a cell in the San Hieronymo Peninsula in Columbia. Roy had been part of a group of Green Berets, who had been sent there to investigate the base. He was the only one who survived and he had been captured and tortured. The two of them escape together, and Campbell provides support throughout the game on the radio. In Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Roy is the only character who the player cannot use on missions because he drives the truck and is on the radio. However, this feature was added in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus. Naked Snake and Roy Campbell later form the group FOXHOUND, a group whose aim is to target rogue FOX members.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the PatriotsSolid Snake for a secret mission; to terminate Liquid. When the player finds Meryl Silverburgh in the game, she warns Snake of Campbell's new wife. This wife has caused a rift between Meryl and Campbell because she is young, and Meryl is now aware that Campbell is her biological father. Later in the game, it is revealed that the wife is none other than Rosemary, the previous girlfriend of Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. However, at the very end of the game, Rosemary explains to Raiden that it was all a pretence, to fool The Patriots and protect their son, Little John.
